I&#8217;ve even heard &#8220;Squadron&#8221;), a few days ago as they overnighted in Corte Brique valley. rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"enthusiastic birders and photographers (opens in a new tab)\">enthusiastic birders and photographers<\/a> here, and have long days in the field showing people what&#8217;s around, and I&#8217;ve been having fun with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Little Owls (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birding-in-portugal.com\/cuckoos-owls-nightjars\/little-owl-athena-noctua\" target=\"_blank\">Little Owls<\/a> over the last two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s one below if \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re always a delightful subject, and fairly thick on the ground so we must pass dozens every day without noticing them, but sometimes I&#8217;m lucky enough to find small family groups, especially during July, like the one below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"http:\/\/retreat-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Little-Owl-4102.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Little-Owl-4102.jpg 650w, it&#8217;s not always so easy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near the Quinta we have our &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birding-in-portugal.com\/holiday-options-and-costs\">Water Rail and Kingfisher Hide<\/a>&#8220;, and waiting down there a couple of days ago I noticed a species of bird that only passes through here on migration. It was stuck in behind the first few reeds on the opposite riverbank, stationary, preening, but I couldn&#8217;t get a clear shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"459\" src=\"http:\/\/retreat-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-4.jpg 650w, https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-4-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it started feeding and slowly made its way towards me &#8211; but always keeping just inside the first few reeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sedge Warbler (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birding-in-portugal.com\/warblers-crests-wren\/sedge-warbler-acrocephalus-schoenabaenus\" target=\"_blank\">Sedge Warbler<\/a>, a regular visitor though one that is only here a few days every year. It&#8217;s small, brown, unobtrusive, shy and another master of inconspicuosity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I dearly wanted to get a good shot, but it was invisible to the naked eye and if I tracked it with my binoculars I might miss the shot if it popped out into the open, so I had to follow it carefully with my camera lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My camera and lens are heavy, just under 5.5 kgs, (over 11.5 lbs), and I hadn&#8217;t brought my monopod with me. How I cursed quietly under my breath over the next 15 minutes as I struggled to hold its flitting passage through the reeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"459\" src=\"http:\/\/retreat-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-3.jpg 650w, https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-2-3-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My forearms ached as I followed it slowly ever closer &#8230; but then, sadly, it turned, and before long was lost in the deeper reeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I never did get a clear view, the best being that below, enough for a clear identification, but not enough for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"459\" src=\"http:\/\/retreat-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-8351.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-8351.jpg 650w, https:\/\/paradise-in-portugal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/21.08.29-Sedge-Warbler-8351-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahh, well, it just means I&#8217;ll have to go down there again, doesn&#8217;t it? Next time I&#8217;ll remember my monopod!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the awful news that we&#8217;re flooded with every day, it is, still, a wonderful world!
